Google Gemini Free Users Will Lose Access to Flash and Pro

Google Gemini Free Users Will Lose Access to Flash and Pro

Google is changing how its Gemini AI service works for free users.

Starting October 9, 2026, people using Gemini without a paid Google AI subscription will only have access to Gemini Flash-Lite. The more powerful Flash and Pro models will no longer be available on the free plan.

This means users who currently use Gemini for coding, research, writing, or more complex questions may notice a difference after the change.

What Is Changing in Google Gemini?

Until now, free Gemini users could access different AI models, including Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro.

That is changing on October 9.

After the change:

– Free users: Flash-Lite only
– Google AI Plus: Flash-Lite and Flash
– Google AI Pro: Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro
– Google AI Ultra: Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro, with additional premium features

Google AI Plus costs $4.99 per month, while Google AI Pro costs $19.99 per month. Google AI Ultra costs $99.99 per month.

Free Gemini Users Will Still Have Access to AI

This does not mean Google is completely removing Gemini from the free plan.

Free users will still be able to use Flash-Lite, which Google describes as an efficient model designed for everyday tasks such as summarization and brainstorming.

However, users who want the standard Flash model will need a paid plan.

The biggest change is for people who rely on the more advanced Gemini Pro model. Free users will no longer have access to it after the new limits take effect.

Google AI Plus Is Also Losing Gemini Pro

There is another important change.

Users paying $4.99 per month for Google AI Plus will also lose access to Gemini Pro. AI Plus will provide access to Flash-Lite and Flash, but not Pro. Google says AI Plus subscribers will receive an email explaining when the change will apply to their accounts.

Users who want Gemini Pro will need to move to the Google AI Pro or Google AI Ultra plan.

What About Deep Think?

Google is also changing access to its advanced reasoning feature called Deep Think.

After the changes, Deep Think will be available with Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra subscriptions rather than being available at lower tiers.

Google is also introducing different effort levels, including low, medium, and high. Higher effort can give Gemini more resources to work on a difficult question, but it can also use up a user’s available limit faster.

What Does This Mean for Gemini Users?

For people who mainly use Gemini for simple questions, rewriting text, brainstorming, or everyday tasks, the change may not be a major problem.

But users who depend on Gemini for coding, difficult math, research, long documents, and complex reasoning may notice the difference.

The move also makes Google’s paid AI plans more important because access to its stronger models is increasingly tied to subscriptions.

Google’s own support documentation says that more advanced models and higher thinking levels can consume more of a user’s available usage.

The Bottom Line

Google is making its free Gemini plan more limited.

From October 9, 2026, free users will get Flash-Lite only, while access to Flash and Pro will require a paid Google AI plan.

For casual users, Flash-Lite may still be enough for everyday AI tasks. For developers, researchers, students, and power users, however, the change could be more noticeable.

The move is another sign that major AI companies are increasingly separating their basic free AI services from their more powerful paid models.
